False Rally

I am not sure, but I really think today's market action was merely a short covering rally.

Don't be fooled. Nothing has fundamentally changed. Do not forget what caused this downturn...excessive debt. (Debt driven growth.) There is only one way out, and governments don't see it. Keynesian economics is taking its last breath, but its death is inevitable.

My puts are unchanged...telling me the big boys are not getting rid of their protection on the downside, but just taking short term profits on short positions.

Also, Goldman is down.

Citi was up 22 cents on the open...now up only 4 cents.

Not a convincing rally, at all.

Gulf Disaster

I have withheld comment on the BP spill in hopes things would get better.

The Gulf of Mexico is being destroyed.

It is so sad.

I cannot understand people who say it is no big deal, or who have no emotional reaction to it at all.

Obviously, deep water drilling poses a great threat to the planet.

I am not an environmentalist, but as a person of some intelligence, I realize the interconnectedness of humans to our environment.

We are not separate from the Earth, as both the DRILL BABY DRILL! and the Whacko left wing environmentalists would have you believe.

My In-Laws are from Mobile, AL and their family and culture has seafood at its center. Once I ate Gulf shrimp, I never wanted any other kind. My husbands great, great grandfather was an oyster fisherman.

What's weird to me, is that people just don't seem to grasp the negative impact this spill is going to have on the South, and ultimately the country. The social, environmental, and economic impacts will be huge.

I cannot believe BP didn't have an emergency plan in place in case such a disaster occurred.

This is a wake up call. America needs to get off oil.

All subsidies to the oil companies should be immediately stopped. This, and only this will cause alternative energies to be profitable for private firms.

The government SHOULD NOT be in the business of subsidizing BIG OIL...period.

Don't Say You Weren't Warned

Sorry for the lack of writing lately...I just haven't been very inspired, and I hate to post worthless dribble.

My family spent the weekend at the in-laws in Hayward, WI on Round lake. Beautiful town, I wouldn't mind moving there.

Anyway, because my husband loves the area, I did a search on Edina realty for lake homes in the area. (Maybe someday!)

I discovered 1,076 lakefront properties for sale. Most had been on the market at least six months. They were all severely overpriced, and not selling at all.

Just confirmation of my suspicions. Real estate is still grossly overvalued in most of the country. We have not hit bottom yet, and we may well have guaranteed our governments future insolvency by trying to stop the downturn.

Real estate prices will fall back to 1996 levels, so will stock markets around the globe.

If you are a trader that is interested in taking on a lot of risk, get short. If you are just a regular person with no back round in finance or economics, get out. Get in cash and hard assets.

Parenting 7-10 Year Olds

I know I write about the markets so often that I neglect to write about Parenting as much as I would like to.

Like anything else, good parenting comes from the Self.

When I am in touch with my true Self, I do a great job parenting. It comes with ease.

When I am in my ego, or little self, I struggle, as many of us do.

When your children are young they want, and need, you most of the time. You put yourself second, and fill their needs first because that is the duty of a parent, and because, well... you just can't help it. They need you, and deserve to be the most important precious priority in your life, because...well... they are.

As they enter school, they become more independent. This was the goal, wasn't it? They no longer obey without question. They are thinking for themselves. This means you did a good job. Actually, a great job. A great job of raising free thinking, independent beings who can think clearly for themselves.

You love them even more, if that is possible. But as your love grows, they need you less and less. This is when is is crucial to set the self aside and let the Self emerge.

I will be here for my children. I will not cling to them, but set them free. They are not Mine, even though they are mine.

I will be here to make sandwiches, buy clothes at the last minute, find the perfect fitting pair of tennis shoes, buy the right kind of Kleenex, make sure the favorite shorts are clean, print out the spelling words in triplicate, scrub goo off the carpet because, "Mom, it's gross!" I will try not to say, "It's gross because you made it gross." Instead I will say, "It's clean now, can we keep it that way?" And then, when they get their own apartment, perhaps they will want it clean too.

BE THE CHANGE YOU WISH TO SEE IN THE WORLD - Ghandi (I happen to agree with him.)

When you wish your children were not hyperactive, be at peace.

When you wish they didn't make messes, clean them up.

When you wish they would show you more respect, be respectful.

When you wish they would work harder, work harder.

When you feel you need their attention, give them some.

And as you children grow, give them space, but always be on call.

Get Out

Save your assets. Realize that the environment we are in is not about chasing returns, it is about capital preservation. We are entering a totally different era. Let the old one go.

If you totally disagree, just get out anyway. If there is no crash and everything is OK, what have you lost? Only what you would have made. Avoid risk at all costs right now, unless it is on the short side.

(As always, trade at your own risk.)

Balance

Balance is valuable. Too much of a good thing can kill you. A little poison, if used properly, can save you.

One of the reasons my tag is: "economics, politics, parenting and inner peace" is because I am interested in all four.

At the moment though, I am obsessed with the economics and politics. Primarily, the global economic and political meltdown we are facing.

When I said we hadn't seem anything yet after 2008, I meant it. A little part of me, though, wanted to be wrong. I really want to be wrong.

Well, I now fear I was not, and am not. The WORLD has simply accumulated so much debt that the ramifications are scary. Debt is fine as a tool. It is NOT sufficient as the ONLY way to generate economic growth.

I was once speaking to a friend about debt. We were both feeling the world had gone sort of crazy. Why do we all need more, and more, and more, even as our households are overflowing with stuff?, we mused.

I have tried to pare back, as many Americans have. I have had some successes, and some failures.

Our collective uncontrollable need for MORE has created a worldwide debt monster. This debt is eating up cash like a giant parasite.

I hope I am wrong, but I think we are entering a VERY tumultuous period in history. Get ready for political and economic instability across the globe the likes of which has not been seen since the WWII era.

They Won't Be Laughing For Long

When the CNBC hosts start to laugh at someones predictions...it tells me that person is probably right. Has this guy (John Lekas - the bear in the video) been reading my blog? (j/k)
